Drive the 2017 Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet, the German automaker's newest convertible luxury flagship!
Mercedes-Benz, with the introduction of the 2017 S-Class Cabriolet, has at last succeeded at developing an S-Class for every conceivable corner of the market: Grand touring coupe to uber-luxe limousine.
There’s a 577bhp 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8, Mercedes’ MCT 7-speed sports transmission, the choice of rear- or four-wheel drive (right-hand-drive markets will get rear-wheel drive only because the steering rack won’t wrap around the front driveshafts) and the world’s largest opening fabric roof.
In fact, when you remember the gargantuan thrust under your right foot, the S63’s not quite as audible as you might imagine, roof up or al fresco. It’d be nice if, once Sport mode is selected, the engine bellowed just a little harder. The less powerful S500 is actually more rumbly and cockle-warming when you’re just mooching around. This car is a born moocher, after all.
Despite the 115kg weight penalty over the S63 coupe, the new Cabriolet, all 2110kg of it, completes the 0-62mph sprint in an identical 4.2sec (the 4Matic four-wheel-drive version is three-tenths quicker at 3.9sec, two-tenths quicker than an S65 coupe) and is artificially limited to 155mph.
